There are other ways to make a social network profitable. For example subscription based models that provide users with exclusive content, access, etc.

A very interesting social network that I have come across recently is called the E.Factor. http://www.efactor.com It is for Entrepreneurs which makes it unique. You can set up a satellite for your network as well.
